Pitch Activity Book - Puppets
Music Resource Description
The "Puppets" activity is a delightful and interactive game from an activity book designed to teach children about pitch and pitch-matching through the use of two charming puppets, ideally named Sophie and Mikhail. The activity begins with a catchy song that greets the children and each of the puppets in turn. The song's simple melody, written in common time, is easy for children to follow and sing along to. The lyrics "Hello children, hello Sophie. Hello children, hello Mikhail," set to a sequence of notes, serve as the foundation for the game.
During the game, the facilitator introduces the two puppets by their names, holding one puppet higher than the other. The puppet held higher, Sophie, sings with a higher pitch (G/So), while the puppet held lower, Mikhail, sings with a lower pitch (E/Mi). As Sophie sings "Hello children," the children respond with "Hello Sophie" on the same musical note. Mikhail and the children then follow the same pattern. The game encourages repeated practice, which helps to reinforce pitch recognition and matching. To further challenge the children, the puppets are held completely still while the game is played, prompting the children to recognise the notes based on the puppets' voices alone. This engaging activity is an excellent way for children to develop their musical ear and differentiate between high and low pitches in a fun and memorable manner.
