Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 1 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
In the third lesson of a pitch-focused series for Year 1 students, the learning objectives are to enhance accuracy in pitch-matching, specifically on the notes So and Mi, deepen the understanding of high and low notes, and to play tuned instruments with a steady pulse and accurate rhythm as an accompaniment to singing. The lesson utilises a range of resources including a hoop and a ball, and incorporates a variety of engaging activities such as singing games like 'Hello Anna' and 'Who Has a Brother?' where children answer questions in song, using the two target notes. The activities are designed to be interactive and dynamic, with changes in volume to add variety and help children express themselves through music.
Main activities include teaching the chant 'Postman's Knock', where children engage with the rhythm and pulse of the song through singing, tapping, and body actions, such as lifting a hoop for high notes and lowering it for low notes. Tuned instruments are also introduced, with children playing the pulse and rhythm on notes G and E. Another key activity is the game 'Doggie Doggie', which is excellent for solo pitch-matching, as children sing and guess who has the 'bone' based on the pitch of the voice. The plenary involves singing 'Goodbye Everyone' while incorporating different modes of engagement: singing, humming, and thinking while playing instruments. These activities align with the National Curriculum, aiming to explore and understand pitch and duration, use voices expressively, and play tuned instruments musically. Further teaching tips and development ideas are provided in the 'Teacher Notes' section.
