Pitch Lesson Plan - Reception Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
The sixth lesson in the Reception Pitch series aims to enhance young students' understanding of pulse, rhythm, and pitch through engaging musical activities. Utilising a simple two-note song, children are encouraged to distinguish between pulse and rhythm, and to apply their skills to playing tuned instruments. The lesson provides an opportunity for children to sing solos using just two notes, fostering their confidence and ability to improvise instrumental patterns. Additionally, the students will develop their auditory skills by internalising and recalling sounds that are higher or lower in pitch.
Key resources for this lesson include a hoop, G and E chime bars, puppets, and a bean bag, which are used in a variety of interactive activities. Children will revisit the chant 'Rain Rain Go Away', tapping the pulse and clapping the rhythm, as well as using body actions to represent high and low notes. They will also engage in games like 'Pass the Puppets Round the Ring', where they practice responding in song while passing puppets in a circle. The lesson concludes with a plenary game and a goodbye song that incorporates singing in different voices. Teacher notes emphasise the importance of using known songs to develop essential musical skills without the immediate need for technical terminology, and provide assessment advice to gauge the children's musical progress.
