Rhythm and Pulse Lesson Plan - Year 3 Lesson 4
Music Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a Year 3 Rhythm & Pulse series, students are encouraged to delve into the world of musical composition by creating their own 4-beat rhythm sequences. The learning objectives are to work collaboratively in groups to craft these sequences using themed words, to rehearse, and to confidently present their performances to the class. Additionally, students will learn to appraise and refine their work. Key vocabulary for this lesson includes pulse, rhythm, compose, and texture. To facilitate the lesson, all that's required are paper and pens for the students to jot down their creative ideas.
The lesson kicks off with a fun 'CONCENTRATION' game that challenges the children's ability to maintain a steady pulse while performing actions and speaking. This activity is not only engaging but also serves as a foundation for understanding rhythm. Moving on, the class is divided into groups to create a CLASS CHANT. Each group is assigned a unique 4-beat rhythm pattern that they will chant in a layered fashion, starting with one group and gradually adding others to create a rich tapestry of sound. The lesson plan offers various levels of differentiation, allowing groups to perform their chants in different configurations, from individual to paired or group chants. After sufficient practice, students perform their pieces, with a focus on maintaining a regular pulse and clear rhythmic sentences. They then receive feedback, which they use to improve their performances. The lesson concludes with 'THE AUSTRIAN' for a light-hearted end to the session. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on ensemble performance, aural memory, and understanding musical elements such as duration, texture, and structure.
