Rhythm and Pulse Year 5 Notations - Double double
Music Resource Description
In Year 5 music lessons, students are introduced to rhythm and pulse through engaging activities such as clapping games. One such game uses the notation and phrase "Double double this this" to teach the concept of rhythm. The game begins with students clapping their own hands together on the word "DOUBLE," which, despite having two syllables, is accompanied by a single clap. When the phrase shifts to "THIS THIS," students then clap their partner's hands. The pattern continues with "THAT THAT," where the back of the students' hands meet the back of their partner's hands in a clap.
To add variety to the game and challenge the students further, an extension activity encourages them to substitute new words for "THIS" and "THAT." For example, they might use "PLAY" and "TIME," creating new rhythmic phrases like "Double double play play" or "Double double time time." The actions remain consistent with the original game, but the children are tasked with thinking up new word pairs that fit the rhythm. This activity not only reinforces their understanding of rhythm and pulse but also allows them to explore creativity in musical expression.
