Rhythm and Pulse Lesson Plan - Year 5 Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Rhythm and Pulse series designed for Year 5 students, the primary objective is to introduce the rhythm notation Ta-a (I), which is equivalent to two beats. The lesson aims to enhance students' abilities to compose rhythm patterns, practice and perform these in groups, and to engage in appraisal of their own and others' work. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes 'rhythm' and 'pulse', terms that are fundamental to understanding the structure and flow of music. Students will engage in a variety of main activities that challenge their ability to follow and replicate rhythmic patterns, such as playing games like 'Concentration' and 'Switch', which involve copying actions in sequences and maintaining rhythm despite changes in pattern or tempo.
Students are encouraged to explore the concept of rhythm further by composing their own 8-beat patterns using the notations I, B, A, and G. They will practice these patterns through chanting, clapping, and creating corresponding actions, with the more advanced groups attempting a 16-beat composition. The lesson also includes differentiated activities to cater to varying levels of ability, ensuring that all students can engage successfully with the material. The lesson concludes with a performance segment where groups present their composed rhythms, followed by an appraisal to assess their timing, synchronisation, and accuracy. Finally, the plenary involves singing with actions, humming, and thinking to reinforce the lesson's concepts, aligning with the National Curriculum's objectives for music education.
