Rhythm and Pulse Lesson Plan - Year 3 Lesson 2
Music Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Rhythm & Pulse series for Year 3, the learning objectives are geared towards enhancing the students' musical abilities. The lesson aims to improve their singing in unison with attention to clear diction and accurate pitch control. Additionally, it focuses on their ability to chant and execute complex actions in time with a steady pulse, as well as to internalise and recall melodic and rhythmic phrases. These objectives are central to developing a strong foundation in musical rhythm and coordination.
The lesson is structured around a series of engaging main activities, beginning with teaching the song 'THE AUSTRIAN', which is an accumulative action singing game that involves tapping and clapping to create rhythm. Following this, the rhythm game 'HI, MY NAME’S JO' is introduced, where children accumulate actions in time with the pulse, including tapping their hands and feet, nodding their heads, and even chanting with their tongues out for a humorous twist. The game 'DIC-DICTATION' further reinforces pulse-keeping skills through a circle chant game that incorporates spelling and number recognition. Finally, the lesson includes 'GRANDMA GRANDMA', another musical activity. The plenary session encourages children to devise and perform their own complex rhythmic patterns, building upon the skills practiced in the lesson. These activities align with the National Curriculum's objectives of singing in groups, attentive listening, and developing aural memory.
