Rhythm and Pulse Lesson Plan - Year 4 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
In the third lesson of a Year 4 Rhythm and Pulse series, students are set to expand their understanding of musical rhythms by recognising and reading different rhythm symbols. The key learning objectives include creating musical patterns in three distinct parts, internalising and recalling rhythm patterns, and relating musical symbols to actions. Students are also expected to rehearse and perform in groups, enhancing their collaborative skills. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes 'rhythm', 'pulse', and 'ostinato', which are fundamental concepts in music education.
The main activities of the lesson involve rhythm names and values, with symbols such as 'TA' for a beat, 'Te-Te' for two quick beats, and 'REST' for a pause. Students will engage in clapping and chanting various 4-beat rhythm phrases, progressively moving from chanting to clapping, and finally internalising the rhythms. They will revisit a familiar song, 'Pease Pudding Hot', and break down its rhythm to chant and clap. The class will be divided into three groups to focus on the pulse, rhythm, and ostinato, each contributing to a cohesive musical performance. Additionally, the lesson includes a rhythm action game, group work, and a plenary session involving a song called 'A Ship Sailed from China'. The lesson is designed to meet several National Curriculum objectives, including singing in unison, understanding musical notation, and developing aural memory.
