Rhythm and Pulse Lesson Plan - Year 6 Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Rhythm and Pulse series for Year 6, students are encouraged to engage with music through a hands-on and creative approach. The overarching objectives are for pupils to compose and perform rhythm rounds using a blend of voices, body percussion, and instruments. They are tasked with maintaining their individual parts while developing an awareness of how these parts interconnect within the group performance. Additionally, they are to appraise their work, listening critically to their own and others' compositions. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as rhythm, pulse, round, together, and timbre, which are fundamental to the understanding of musical structure and performance.
The lesson is dynamic, starting with an activity that sharpens concentration by clapping on selected beats while counting to eight. This evolves into composing rhythm rounds, where students use a combination of 'TA', 'Te-Te', and 'REST' to create patterns in a four-beat structure. As confidence grows, they share their rounds, practice in groups, and eventually perform with instruments, ensuring a steady pulse is maintained throughout. Differentiation is considered, with simpler tasks for some and more challenging ones for advanced groups. The lesson concludes with a plenary where students sing together, reinforcing the communal aspect of music-making. This practical approach not only meets the National Curriculum's requirements for understanding musical notation and ensemble performance but also fosters an environment where students can confidently compose and perform rhythm patterns with increasing accuracy and control.
