What does the Year 3 scheme cover?

Focus Education prioritises equipping Year 3 teachers with the essential tools to deliver exceptional History lessons, ensuring remarkable outcomes for pupils. With each lesson focussing around an enquiry-based question, substantive and disciplinary knowledge builds over time to become firmly embedded. This approach not only cultivates a chronological understanding of local, British and world history, but also fosters a lasting appreciation of how our present actions can shape the future.

Ancient Greeks

In this unit, delve into the governance of Ancient Greece and the pivotal role it played in introducing democracy to the world. Identify key cities, exploring their individual significance, and examine the origins of the Ancient Greek Olympics and the influence they have had on the modern Olympic Games. Find out what the Ancient Greeks wore and ate, as well as understand what the Athenians and Spartans had in common and how they differed.

Key questions answered:

  • What evidence is there that the Ancient Greeks were more advanced than Ancient Britons?
  • What did the Ancient Greeks introduce that we benefit from today?
  • How were the Ancient Greeks influenced by their Gods?
  • What was everyday life like for the Ancient Greeks?
  • What were the main characteristics of the Spartans and the Athenians?

Stone Age

Delve into the archaeological discoveries of Skara Brae and Stonehenge in this unit, gaining insights into how these sites have enhanced our understanding of life 5000 years ago. Use timelines to recognise how the Stone Age period is divided up into three periods and explore how Britain changed between the Stone Age and Iron Age. Understand the significance of the discovery of iron ore, and how the invention of the wheel enabled chariots to be built to move both essential supplies and people. Find out how people relied on hunting and fishing for sustenance, especially during the Ice Age, and how they gradually discovered the art of gathering edible plants.

Key questions answered:

  • How did Britain change from the Stone Age to the end of the Iron Age?
  • What is the significance of the invention of the wheel?
  • What are some of the key differences between the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages?
  • What is meant by the term ‘hunter-gatherer’?

Homes over Time

Take a look at how homes used to be in the Victorian era and compare this to how our homes look today in this unit, exploring connections, contrasts and trends over time. Explore how the ways in which we use items, such as telephones, have changed over the years, and which day of the week was once known as ‘washing day’, acknowledging technological advancements and shifts in lifestyle.

Key questions answered:

  • How has the way we prepare food changed over time?
  • How have the utensils we use in the kitchen changed over time?
  • How has technology changed the way we live?
  • How has the telephone, television and the way we heat our homes changed over time?
  • How has the area outside our homes changed over time?

History of Bury

Set off on an exploration of the historical formation of Bury during this unit, tracing its roots back to an ancient marketplace with evidence of existence dating as far back as the Roman occupation of Britain. Uncover the transformative impact of the Industrial Revolution on Bury, observing how it increased job opportunities and elevated living standards, thereby altering the landscape of the town. Delve into the historical context of Bury during World War II, discovering the presence of a prisoner of war camp at Warth Mills. Understand the wartime significance of this location and the role it played in the broader historical narrative of the town.
