Connecting images - How homes have changed
History Resource Description
In a classroom activity aimed at exploring the evolution of homes over time, pupils are presented with a selection of photographs depicting various types of dwellings. The task for the pupils is to work independently to identify and make connections between two of the images provided. Each connection must be underpinned by a plausible reason that explains how the images are related, whether through architectural styles, periods of history, types of materials used, or advancements in home technology. This activity not only encourages students to think critically about the historical and social factors that influence the way homes are built but also allows them to practice their reasoning and analytical skills.
For every valid connection made between the photographs, pupils are awarded 5 points, turning the exercise into a game that incentivises thoughtful participation. They are given a total of 10 minutes to examine the images and formulate their links. This engaging task prompts pupils to consider the various ways in which homes have transformed over time, reflecting changes in society, technology, and design preferences. It is an interactive way to delve into the subject of historical development and the factors that have shaped our living spaces throughout the years.
