Instrumental Activity Book - What will You Play?
Music Resource Description
The "Instrumental Activity Book" introduces a playful and educational music game titled "What will You Play?" designed for a group of children sitting in a circle. At the centre of the circle are two chime bars, one tuned to a G note and the other to an E note, along with a beater for playing them. The activity begins with the children listening carefully to the two notes, with the aim of distinguishing the difference in pitch and identifying which note is higher and which is lower. This auditory exercise helps develop their musical ear and prepares them for the interactive game ahead.
During the game, the children sing the question "What will you play for us to-day?" while passing a beanbag around the circle in time with the music. When the word 'today' is sung, the child holding the beanbag takes their turn in the spotlight. They sit in front of the chime bars and play four steady notes, choosing the sequence in which they play the G and E notes. The rest of the group listens and responds by singing back the sequence using the words 'high' for the G note and 'low' for the E note, matching the pitch accurately. After two turns, the child rejoins the circle, and the beanbag continues to be passed as the game carries on, giving each child an opportunity to experiment with the chime bars and enjoy the musical interaction.
