Instrumental Lesson Plan - Year 2 Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In Year 2, Lesson 5 of the instrumental activities, students are set to explore the dynamics of rhythm and pulse through a variety of engaging exercises. The learning objectives for this session include playing both tuned and un-tuned instruments to a steady beat, internalising rhythm patterns, and performing in a group while distinguishing between different rhythmic symbols. The children will be using key rhythmic vocabulary such as 'Ta', 'Te-te', and 'sh' during the lesson. To facilitate these activities, the resources required include instruments that can be tapped and some G and E chime bars for creating different musical sounds.
The lesson commences with vocal exercises accompanied by instruments and progresses to clapping and playing on selected beats, which helps to reinforce the understanding of rhythm. A new chant titled 'MICE, MICE' is introduced, with various tracks guiding the children through chanting, tapping, and playing the rhythm on instruments. The lesson plan is designed to cater to different abilities, with groups divided based on skill level to perform tasks ranging from chanting and playing to a steady pulse to participating in a rhythm action game with instruments. The session concludes with a performance and appraisal segment where the children evaluate their timing, rhythm accuracy, and instrument control. A plenary activity involves singing and a finger-wiggling game while tidying away the instruments. These activities align with the National Curriculum, which emphasises the use of voice, playing instruments, exploring musical elements, and performing with others.
