Instrumental Lesson Plan - Year 2 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
In Year 2, Lesson 3 of the instrumental activities series, students are encouraged to deepen their rhythmic understanding and musical expression. The learning objectives focus on internalising and recalling longer rhythm patterns, creating musical patterns from symbolic orders, and practicing them on instruments with varying timbres. Additionally, students aim to accompany their singing by playing to a steady pulse and responding to cue words. Key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'start', 'stop', 'tap', 'shake', 'scrape', and 'ring', which relate to the actions students will perform with their instruments.
The lesson utilises a range of resources including instruments categorised as tappers, shakers, scrapers, and bells, alongside small symbol cards to guide musical play. The main activities comprise games such as START/STOP, where students practice initiating and ceasing their playing, and ECHO RHYTHMS, which challenges them to replicate rhythm patterns that gradually increase in complexity. The INSTRUMENT AND SYMBOL ORDER GAME encourages students to clap and play sequences based on the layout of symbol cards, promoting pattern recognition and memory. As an extension, students are invited to create and perform their own longer rhythmic patterns, fostering creativity and group collaboration. The plenary involves an INSTRUMENT AND ACTION GAME, which combines listening skills with physical responses, and a song to guide the tidy-up process. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, emphasising experimentation with sounds, exploring timbre and duration, playing instruments musically, singing expressively, and performing collaboratively.
