Instrumental Lesson Plan - Reception Lesson 4
Music Resource Description
Reception students are set to embark on an engaging musical journey with Lesson 4 of the Instrumental Activities series. The learning objectives for this lesson are to internalise a song and to recall and reproduce rhythm patterns using their voices, clapping, and instruments. The key vocabulary words for this lesson include 'start', 'stop', 'copy', and 'solo', which are fundamental to the activities planned. Each child will be provided with instruments that can be tapped, such as tambourines or wooden blocks, and a big drum will also be used during the session.
The main activities of the lesson revolve around interactive and auditory experiences. Children will begin by playing the 'Start/Stop Game' with their instruments, learning to respond to musical cues. They will also participate in 'Follow the Rhythm of the Drum', a group activity where they match the rhythms played on the big drum. The song 'Apple Tree' will be taught and explored through various exercises, including singing and tapping the pulse, clapping the rhythm, and eventually, thinking and tapping the rhythm on their instruments, with opportunities for solo performances. Additional games like 'Early in the Morning' and chanting '5 Fat Sausages', starting from the number 10 and tapping on the word 'Bang!', will further reinforce their rhythmic skills. To conclude the instrumental portion of the lesson, the song 'Put Them Back So They Don't Crack' will guide children in tidying away their instruments. The plenary will involve a fun activity called 'I Wiggle My Fingers' to wind down the session. Teachers can refer to the 'Teacher Notes' for additional guidance and can use the provided DVD tracks to offer a visual demonstration of the games and activities.
