Instrumental Reception Notations - What will you play instrumental
Music Resource Description
In this engaging musical activity designed for children, the concept of instrumental reception and notation is introduced through a simple and interactive game. The setting is a classroom where children are seated in a circle with two chime bars, one tuned to G and the other to E, placed at the centre along with a beater. The purpose of the exercise is to help the children discern the difference between the two pitches and to become familiar with identifying which note is higher and which is lower through listening exercises.
During the activity, the children sing a melody with the lyrics "What will you play for us today?" while a beanbag is passed around the circle in time with the music. When the word 'today' is sung, the child holding the beanbag takes a seat in the middle of the circle in front of the chime bars. The chosen child then plays four steady notes, deciding the sequence themselves, whether to strike the G (high) or the E (low) chime bar. After playing, the rest of the children sing back the sequence using the words 'high' and 'low' to match the pitches played. For example, if the child played G G E E, the response would be 'High high low low'. After two turns, the child rejoins the circle and the game continues, allowing each child to participate and practice their auditory skills.
