Instrumental Activity Book - Instrument and Action Game
Music Resource Description
The Instrument and Action Game is an interactive listen and response activity designed to engage a class in recognising different musical instruments and their corresponding sounds through physical actions. To play the game, a variety of instruments are placed in front of the group, and together, the class assigns a specific action to each instrument. For example, playing the claves might prompt the class to clap their hands, while the agogo could signal tapping knees, a shaker could mean shaking hands, and bells could be associated with performing a 'roly poly' motion with their hands. The teacher or a designated student then plays the instruments at random, prompting the class to respond with the correct actions associated with each sound.
A second version of the Instrument and Action Game adds an element of mystery and tests the children's auditory discernment. In this variation, a child is chosen to secretly play the instruments out of sight of the rest of the class. The rest of the students must listen carefully to identify the instrument being played and respond with the appropriate action. This version is more challenging and it is recommended that the class is familiar with the first version of the game before attempting this one. The game not only enhances listening skills but also reinforces the association between sound and movement, making it a fun and educational experience.
