Instrumental Lesson Plan - Reception Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In the fifth instrumental lesson for reception-aged children, the primary objective is to deepen their understanding of rhythm through various musical activities. The lesson aims to reinforce the rhythm of a chant by using voice, body percussion, and both tuned and un-tuned instruments. Additionally, the children will be encouraged to improvise short melodies on pitched instruments and develop their ability to recognise high and low notes. Key vocabulary terms such as 'chant', 'tap', 'play', 'high', and 'low' will be integral to the lesson, ensuring the children become familiar with these musical concepts.
The lesson's main activities involve a series of interactive and engaging exercises. It begins with a vocal warm-up, followed by tapping exercises on un-tuned instruments to the rhythm of a track. The children will revisit the song 'Apple Tree', progressing through singing, clapping, thinking, and playing the rhythm with the aid of various tracks. G and E chime bars are introduced for the children to explore the pulse and rhythm of tunes. A game that requires the children to pass a beanbag and respond to cues about playing high and low notes on the chime bars helps them recognise pitch differences. The session wraps up with a plenary activity that includes a movement song. Teachers can refer to the provided DVD for visual demonstrations of the games and activities, ensuring a clear understanding of the lesson's flow. For those with prior knowledge of pitch from KS1 lesson plans, the concepts of 'so' and 'mi' will be revisited; otherwise, additional explanation may be needed to grasp the concept of high and low notes in music.
