Instrumental Lesson Plan - Year 1 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
The third instrumental lesson for Year 1 students is designed to enhance their musical skills by focusing on rhythm pattern recognition and replication, tempo response, conductor following, and the ability to chant and play in two parts. The learning objectives are clearly laid out, aiming to internalise rhythm patterns and respond to various tempos while coordinating with a conductor and playing instruments in harmony with chants. A selection of instruments, including tappers, shakers, scrapers, and bells, along with a large drum and symbol cards, are required as resources for the activities planned.
The main activities of the lesson are interactive and engaging. Students are grouped by instrument type and participate in the 'START/STOP GAME' to practice controlling their instruments with cues. They also engage in the 'DRUM GAME' to explore different tempos. Echo rhythms and the chant 'BUSTER BUSTER' are used to develop rhythm and coordination, with half the class tapping out the chant while the other half taps the action words. The plenary involves putting instruments away while singing and concludes with the 'I WIGGLE MY FINGERS' activity. Teacher notes emphasise the importance of understanding the composition of 4-beat rhythm patterns and suggest claves or similar instruments for tapping activities to ensure accuracy in rhythm creation. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on exploring timbre, tempo, and duration, expressive voice use, and playing untuned instruments musically.
