Instrumental Lesson Plan - Year 2 Lesson 2
Music Resource Description
The second instrumental lesson for Year 2 students is crafted to enhance their ability to play un-tuned instruments with precision, guided by visual and verbal cues. The learning objectives are focused on accurately following instructions through gestures and symbol cards, listening and internalising complex rhythm patterns, and maintaining a steady pulse. Additionally, students are encouraged to recall and improvise their own 4-beat rhythm patterns on various instruments. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'start', 'stop', 'tap', 'shake', 'scrape', 'ring', and 'rhythm', which are essential for the activities planned.
During the lesson, students will engage in a series of interactive activities, starting with the Drum Game, where they will be grouped by the type of instruments they handle, such as tappers, shakers, scrapers, and bells. The Start/Stop Game will then teach them to respond to auditory signals. The session progresses with the Drum Game, where each group will play to a different beat, and the Clap and Play on Chosen Beats activity, which will help them focus on specific beats within a sequence. Children will also be encouraged to create their own rhythm patterns for the class to play, fostering creativity and leadership. Echo Rhythms and the song 'The Echo Man' will further develop their listening and replication skills. The lesson culminates with the class learning 'My Aunt Came Back', a call and response song with actions replaced by instrumental accompaniment, and 'Have You Brought Your Talking Voice?', an interactive activity with instruments. The plenary includes singing 'Goodbye Everyone' and 'Put Them Back So They Don't Crack', ensuring a musical end to the session as instruments are tidied away.
