Instrumental Reception Notations - The drum game instrumental
Music Resource Description
The Drum Game is an engaging and interactive activity designed to enhance children's listening and responding skills through the medium of rhythm and percussion. The game is adaptable to various group sizes and can be played with children seated in a circle or group formation. The basic premise is straightforward, with the complexity of the game being adjustable to suit the children's abilities. In its initial version, the facilitator plays different tempos on a drum, each tempo corresponding to a specific action: a slow pulse prompts the children to clap their hands, a faster pulse leads to tapping their knees, and the fastest tempo cues them to perform 'roly poly hands'. If the drumming stops, the children are to cease their actions immediately. Initially, the actions may be called out, but as the children grow more adept, they are expected to respond to the drumming alone, sharpening their attentiveness.
As the game evolves, Version 2 introduces instrumental groups to the mix. Here, the slow pulse on the drum is accompanied by tappers and scrapers; the faster pulse brings in the shakers, and the bells join in when the drumming reaches its quickest pace. The ensemble halts when the drumming ceases. Version 3 further challenges the children by having them follow a 4-beat rhythm pattern played on the drum. They must listen, pick up the rhythm, and play along on their own instruments, stopping when the drum stops. The game continues with various rhythm patterns, and an extension of the activity can involve selecting a child to lead the rhythm, fostering leadership and musical skills. This game not only makes music fun but also develops crucial auditory and coordination abilities.
