Singing Games Activity Book - Frere Jacques
Music Resource Description
The Singing Games Activity Book introduces a delightful way for children to engage with the classic French song "Frère Jacques" through a combination of singing and coordinated movements. In this activity, children are arranged into two concentric circles, with each child in the inner circle facing a peer in the outer circle, ensuring that the number of participants in both circles is equal. As they sing the familiar tune, they perform a series of actions that correspond with the lyrics, adding a kinesthetic element to the musical experience.
The sequence of movements starts with tapping knees four times to the line "Frère Jacques," followed by clapping hands four times as the line is repeated. When singing "Dormez-vous?" the children clap their partner's hands three times and then repeat the action. As they sing "Sonnez les matines," they raise their hands from high to low, wiggling their fingers to mimic the ringing of morning bells. Finally, for the "Ding, dang, dong" lines, they wave to their current partner, and then the children in the inner circle move one place to the right, greeting their new partner with a wave. The game is designed to continue in this pattern, promoting interaction, rhythm, and fun as the song progresses.
