Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 2 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a series designed for Year 2 students, the children are introduced to new singing games aimed at enhancing their musical abilities. The learning objectives set for this session are to engage in singing games, sing with an awareness of melody and rhythm, follow actions linked to cue words, and internalise and clap rhythms while singing. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'sing', 'pulse', 'actions', and 'internalise', which are crucial for understanding the musical concepts being taught.
The main activities of the lesson involve teaching three different singing games. 'Round de doo bop' is a circle game that incorporates actions related to the lyrics, such as acting out meeting a senorita or a bareback rider, with optional props like a string of flowers or a cowboy hat. 'Let Us Chase the Squirrels' requires the children to form groups of three to enact squirrels and trees, with some children playing the role of 'robber squirrels'. The game 'B.I.N.G.O.' is a well-known action song that helps develop internalising skills, and children get to play with claves as an alternative to clapping. The lesson concludes with a plenary where children sing or hum 'Goodbye Everyone' and are encouraged to share the games they've learned with others during playtime. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on playing instruments, performing with others, singing expressively, and understanding musical concepts like duration and pitch.
