Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 2 Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of the Year 2 Singing Games series, children are set to learn and engage in a variety of singing games, some new and some familiar. The objectives for this lesson are multifaceted: the children will sing melodies with awareness of their shape and rhythm, participate in actions prompted by cue words, and improvise movements to a steady beat. They will also gain experience in singing solo and in small groups, building their confidence. Additionally, they will move and dance within a musical time frame and engage in performance and appraisal activities, providing them with a holistic musical experience.
The main activities of the lesson include teaching the games 'Jump Jim Jo' and 'Two Fine Ladies from Tennessee', as well as playing 'The Muffin Man'. 'Jump Jim Jo' is introduced incrementally, allowing children to observe and then join in, ensuring they are ready to participate. For 'Two Fine Ladies from Tennessee', it's recommended to teach the do-si-do dance move before the rest of the game. After practice, the class is divided for performances of 'The Muffin Man', with the observing half appraising the performance based on criteria such as clarity of solo voices, adherence to a steady pulse, and quickness in position changes. The lesson concludes with singing or humming 'Goodbye Everyone'. Teacher notes emphasize the importance of teaching the song before the game and maintaining a good circle when walking, with additional resources and instructions available in the 'notations' section and on the provided CD-ROM.
