Singing Games Activity Book - Hot Potato
Music Resource Description
The "Hot Potato" singing game is a lively activity that encourages children to engage with music and rhythm while having fun. The game is set to a catchy tune with simple lyrics that repeat the phrase "hot potato, pass it on," prompting children to pass an imaginary hot potato around. The melody is playful and designed to help children keep time as they play the game. It's a perfect activity to incorporate into a music lesson, helping to develop a sense of rhythm and timing in young learners.
There are two variations of the game outlined in the activity book. In Game 1, children form a circle with one child in the center holding a ball. The ball is bounced rhythmically between the center child and their peers to the beat of the song until the cue "get rid of" is sung. At this point, the child in the middle tosses the ball to another child in the circle, and they quickly swap places, continuing the game. The aim is to maintain an accurate pulse with the bouncing ball, starting with the word "hot." If the rhythm falters, the game may need to be restarted. Game 2 is similar but with no child in the middle. The children pass the ball around the circle, and on the word "rid," the child holding the ball throws it across to someone else, choosing the next direction for the ball to go. Both games are designed to enhance children's coordination and musical timing in an interactive and enjoyable way.
