Singing Games Lesson Plan - Reception Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
The Reception class embarks on their sixth Singing Games lesson with a set of exciting objectives aimed at enhancing their musical coordination and memory. The children are set to learn how to pass and roll a ball in time with the pulse of the music while singing, and to sing simple songs from memory, incorporating actions on cue words. A key part of the lesson is to clap and jump to the rhythm of the words in the song 'Jump Jim Jo', which not only engages them physically but also helps in understanding musical timing and rhythm. The lesson utilises a ball as a resource to facilitate these activities, and the key vocabulary focuses on words such as 'sing', 'walk', and 'pass' to guide the children through the musical games.
Main activities for the session include playing 'Let Us Chase the Squirrels' and 'Hot Potato', where children practice passing the ball to the pulse and rolling it on cue during the song. Another activity is 'Jump Jim Jo', which after practice, is performed by the children for their peers, with the audience tasked with appraising the performance based on timing, melody, and actions. The plenary invites the children to reflect on their favourite games from the past six lessons, discussing their preferences and potentially showcasing their skills to other classes. Teachers are provided with notes to assist in guiding the children through these activities, with emphasis on practice for coordinating ball passing with the musical pulse, and suggestions for assessing musical ability through performance and peer appraisal.
