Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 6 Lesson 5
Music Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a series for Year 6, students are encouraged to engage in singing games that blend musical understanding with physical movement. The learning objectives are multifaceted: children are expected to learn new movements and actions associated with singing games, sing with clear diction, memorise actions linked to cue words, move accurately to musical phrases, and coordinate a variety of actions to a pulse while singing. This lesson is not only about vocal performance but also about enhancing the children's ability to multitask and improve their musical timing.
The lesson utilises a selection of resources and activities that are designed to be interactive and enjoyable. For example, 'Sailing on the Ocean' is a circle game that encourages partner selection and dance, while 'Round de doo bop' incorporates role play with an opportunity for children to act out scenes and use props like a string of flowers or a cowboy hat for added fun. The improvisational element is emphasised in 'My Aunt Came Back', an accumulative call-and-response action game that challenges students to remember and perform an increasing number of actions. The lesson concludes with 'Goodbye Mary', another game that helps to reinforce the skills practised throughout the session. The teacher notes acknowledge that Year 6 students may initially be reluctant to participate in activities involving holding hands or choosing partners, but the experience is designed to be enjoyable and engaging, helping students to overcome any initial hesitations. All activities align with the National Curriculum, focusing on using voices to create music collaboratively while understanding elements such as duration and pitch.
