Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 4 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a series for Year 4 students, the primary focus is on singing games which aim to enhance melodic and rhythmic accuracy, as well as to develop improvisation skills and the ability to memorise and perform complex movement sequences. The lesson's learning objectives are ambitious; students are expected to follow cue word actions precisely, improvise their own actions, move within a set musical time frame, and remember an extended series of movements that form part of a game.
The main activities of this lesson involve a variety of engaging singing games. 'Skating Away' is a circle game that challenges a group of four children to create a star formation in the centre, moving in the opposite direction to their peers in the outer circle. The game is designed to be played continuously, encouraging children to attentively listen to the song, recognise their cue words, and move according to the rhythm of the music. Additionally, students revisit 'Oats and Beans and Barley Grow' from the previous week and sing 'The Austrian' from lesson four. The plenary session includes the song 'Goodbye Mary' and serves as a reminder of the various singing and movement games learnt throughout the six lessons, encouraging students to share these games in the playground and beyond. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum's objectives of singing in unison, improving accuracy and control, and developing an understanding of duration and pitch.
