Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 5 Lesson 1
Music Resource Description
The first lesson in a series of singing games for Year 5 students aims to teach them traditional playground games while enhancing their musical skills. The learning objectives for this lesson are multifaceted: students are expected to learn the games, sing with clear diction, chant with rhythmic precision, and develop coordination in activities involving clapping and bouncing a ball in time with a steady pulse. The key vocabulary words for this session include 'pulse', 'rhythm', and 'sequence', which are essential concepts in musical education.
Main activities of the lesson involve teaching the 'HOT POTATO' game, where two versions are introduced, and it is imperative that the song is taught clearly before the game begins. The children practice bouncing and catching on the beat, with any loss of rhythm prompting a restart of the game. Another activity is the 'DOUBLE DOUBLE THIS THIS' clapping game, which initially is practiced without a partner to ensure accurate learning of the rhythm and actions. Once mastered, the children partner up to perform the game. They are also encouraged to get creative by inventing variations using different compound words. The lesson culminates in a big circle game, involving the entire class, and a plenary discussion where the children reflect on the games they enjoyed most and the musical skills they are developing. To prepare for the next lesson, the song 'ON CORRIANDA' is introduced or revisited. These activities align with the National Curriculum's goal of exploring duration and performing in an ensemble context with increasing accuracy and control.
