Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 6 Lesson 4
Music Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a series on singing games for Year 6 students, the learning objectives are to enhance vocal clarity and phrasing, to learn and perform dance movements and actions accompanying a song, and to sing in a round. The aim is also to challenge students to sing and play two singing games simultaneously while maintaining their own part and being mindful of how the other song integrates. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes pulse, rhythm, phrase, internalise, and round. Each child is provided with claves—ideally two, but one will suffice—and a ball is used as part of the activities.
The main activities of the lesson involve teaching and playing the song 'JOHN KANAKA' as well as the game associated with it. Students are encouraged to play out loud and then to internalise the music using 'thinking voices'. Extensions of the lesson include singing 'JOHN KANAKA' in a round, revising the game 'BOW WOW WOW', and eventually combining both games. An extra extension activity is to create four circles and play the two games in canon, both out loud and using thinking voices. The lesson also incorporates a ball game for 'JOHN KANAKA', which requires coordination and rhythm. The plenary encourages discussion about the experience of singing in a round and the challenges of performing two games or songs at the same time. The lesson is designed to explore musical texture and duration, as outlined in the National Curriculum, and to develop singing and voice control in a group setting. Teacher notes suggest that the content may extend beyond a single lesson, offering opportunities for further skill development throughout the week.
