Singing Games Lesson Plan - Year 5 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
In the third lesson of the Singing Games series for Year 5, students are expected to achieve several learning objectives that combine music and movement. The primary goals are to pass claves to a steady pulse while singing, internalise the lyrics of a song, and play rhythmic phrases with precision on percussion instruments. The lesson culminates in a class performance where students showcase their skills. Additionally, they will practise listening critically to their peers' performances, focusing on maintaining a steady pulse and playing accurate rhythms while also internalising the words silently.
The lesson is structured around a series of engaging activities. Starting with the song 'OBWISANA,' students sing while tapping the pulse on their knees and the floor. The main activity involves playing a game that requires passing claves in time to the music. Children sit in a circle, each with a pair of claves, and alternate between tapping the claves and the floor while singing. An extension activity challenges them to tap the rhythm of the words and play on the rest at the end of certain lines. The lesson also includes a ball game where the children pass a ball in a circle to the pulse of the song, adding an element of physical coordination to the musical exercise. The plenary session tests the children's ability to internalise the words and tap the pulse accurately. This lesson supports the National Curriculum's objectives for music, including singing in groups, exploring duration, playing instruments with control, and performing in ensemble contexts.
