Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 6 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a series for Year 6 students, the primary focus is on enhancing their abilities to read rhythm and pitch notation, and to play pentatonic melodies with precision. The lesson's objectives include practising and performing both as a class and individually, as well as composing original rhythm and pitch notations for the class to practise and perform. The key vocabulary for this lesson encompasses musical terms such as pulse, rhythm, and the solfège syllables La, So, Mi, Re, and Do, with 'round' also introduced as a concept.
Utilising resources such as chime bars tuned to the notes A, G, D, E, and C, a whiteboard with pen, and optional stave notation worksheets, students engage in a variety of activities. They begin by notating the song 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' and revising previous lessons to familiarise themselves with the tune. Forming a 'Chime Bar Orchestra', the class is divided into groups, each responsible for a different note, and progresses through singing, playing, and thinking their allocated notes in conjunction with the song. The lesson advances with students composing their own patterns for the orchestra to play, and culminates in performances where they demonstrate their ability to keep in time with the pulse and each other, and accurately read the music. For those ready for further challenges, extension activities involve composing on stave notation and performing the piece in a round. The plenary brings the lesson to a close with a collective singing and playing of 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' while maintaining the pulse on tuned instruments. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, aiming to develop composition skills, explore pitch and duration, and enhance vocal and instrumental performance in an ensemble context.
