Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 6 Lesson 2
Music Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 6 pitch series, students are introduced to the solfa note 'La' and its accompanying hand sign. The learning objectives are to recognise and sing the intervals between 'Mi', 'So', and 'La', and to sing from notated rhythm and pitch patterns using the notes Bb, A, G alongside the solfa notes 'So', 'Mi', 'La'. Key vocabulary for this lesson includes 'La', 'So', 'Mi', pitch, and interval. Resources required are a whiteboard and pen, and optionally, stave notation worksheet 3. The lesson consists of singing exercises, starting with the chant 'WE ARE KIDS FROM MANY A NATION', progressing through one-note singing to incorporating the new note 'La'. Activities include rhythm and pitch pattern exercises, silent singing patterns, and introducing the character 'Lara' (or 'La'), who is associated with the new hand sign.
Main activities in the lesson involve interactive singing games and exercises that encourage students to engage with the new material. Through the chant 'WE ARE KIDS FROM MANY A NATION' and the game 'CONCENTRATION', students practice singing and identifying intervals, as well as the new note 'La'. They also explore rhythm patterns and silent singing, which help to solidify their understanding of pitch. The plenary includes teaching the song 'I'M OFF TO TOWN', which reinforces the 'L S M' intervals and provides opportunities for solo singing. For those interested in notation, there is an optional stave notation worksheet available to practice writing pitch and rhythm. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on singing, understanding pitch and duration, aural memory, and musical notation.
