Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 3 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In Lesson 6 of the Year 3 Pitch series, students are set to deepen their understanding of pentatonic melodies through practical music-making activities. The lesson's objectives are to play pentatonic melodies on tuned instruments from notation with rhythmic accuracy, practice and perform as a class and individually, and to compose their own rhythm and pitch notations for the class to practice and perform. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes musical terms such as pulse, rhythm, and the solfège syllables La, So, Mi, Re, Do. Resources required for the lesson include multiple A, G, E, D, and C chime bars, a whiteboard with a pen, and optional stave notation sheets.
The main activities commence with notating the song 'PUMPKIN PUMPKIN' on the board and revising previous lessons to familiarise students with the song. Students are then divided into groups, with each group allocated a specific note to focus on. Using chime bars, each group will sing and play their assigned note, progressing to playing without singing. The students are encouraged to compose their own patterns for the chime bar orchestra to play, with notated pentatonic patterns provided as a guide. The lesson includes performance and appraisal elements, where students perform their pieces and receive feedback on timing, coordination, and accuracy of reading music. For those ready for more advanced work, Stave Notation Sheet 8 is available. The lesson concludes with a plenary activity involving singing the song 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' in various vocal techniques. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on pitch and duration, singing, musical notation, composition, and performance with increasing accuracy and control.
