Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 5 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a Year 5 pitch series, students are set to enhance their understanding of rhythm and pitch notation through a series of engaging activities. The primary aim is to read and play pentatonic melodies with precision, both as a class and individually. Additionally, students are encouraged to compose their own rhythm and pitch notations, which the class will then practice and perform. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes musical terms such as pulse, rhythm, and the solfège syllables La, So, Mi, Re, and Do, essential for understanding pitch relationships in music.
The lesson utilises resources like chime bars tuned to the notes A, G, D, E, and C, a whiteboard with a pen for notation, and optional stave notation worksheets. Students start by revising the 'PENTATONIC MELODY' and then form a 'Chime Bar Orchestra' to play the melody in groups, each assigned a specific note. Activities progress from singing to playing, and then thinking and playing their assigned note, with accompanying tracks to guide them. For creative expression, students compose their own patterns for the orchestra to play and may use stave notation worksheets for more structured composition. The lesson concludes with performances and appraisal, focusing on timing, coordination, and reading accuracy, and it culminates with a plenary where the class sings 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' while playing the pulse on tuned instruments. This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, covering composition, pitch and duration exploration, vocal and instrumental performance, and ensemble participation.
