Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 3 Lesson 1
Music Resource Description
In the first lesson of the Year 3 Pitch series, students are introduced to the exciting world of vocal exploration and the foundational musical concept of pitch intervals. The lesson's objectives are to experiment with various vocal techniques, recognize and sing the So and Mi interval, and to learn the corresponding solfa names and hand signs. Students will also engage in reading simple notated rhythm and pitch patterns that incorporate Bb, A, G, and the So and Mi notes. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'So', 'Mi', 'pitch', and 'interval', which are crucial for students to grasp the lesson content effectively.
The main activities of the lesson are interactive and engaging. Students begin by learning the chant 'Cobbler Cobbler' and progress from speaking to singing voices, emphasizing the high and low notes. They then play a game called 'We All Have Different Faces', which involves singing and actions, allowing children to express where they are from using the notes So and Mi. The characters Sophie (So) and Mikhail (Mi) are introduced with engaging stories and hand signs to help students remember the pitches. The lesson includes rhythm pattern exercises, silent singing patterns, and the opportunity for children to read and perform pitch patterns. It concludes with a plenary session where students sing 'Goodbye Everyone' and incorporate various actions. This lesson plan aligns with the National Curriculum, aiming to explore pitch and duration, develop singing and listening skills, understand musical notation, and perform in solo contexts.
