Pitch Lesson Plan - Year 3 Lesson 3
Music Resource Description
In the third lesson of a Year 3 pitch series, students are introduced to the solfa note 'Do' and its corresponding hand sign. The learning objectives are to understand and sing the intervals between 'Do', 'Mi', 'So', and 'La', and to vocalise notated rhythm and pitch patterns. The lesson incorporates key vocabulary such as pitch and interval, and requires resources like a whiteboard, pen, and optionally, stave notation worksheet 4. The main activities start with rhythm and pitch patterns using hand signs, followed by silent singing, both previously introduced and now extended with the new note 'Do'. A chant, 'Cobbler Cobbler', is used to help students identify the new note by its words and melody. The character representing 'Do', named Dodi, is described as a warm, friendly lady, symbolising the note with a hand sign at knee-level.
The lesson continues with exercises to reinforce the pitch of 'Do', using rhythm patterns sung at Dodi's pitch without varying the hand's height, to emphasise the concept of pitch constancy. Students also engage in 'So Mi Do' patterns with hand signs and silent singing to develop their aural memory and vocal skills. They are encouraged to sing solos and participate in a ball game called 'Tinker Tailor' to further practice the intervals. As a plenary, anticipation is built for the next lesson where they will meet the final character, 'Raymond'. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum, focusing on pitch and duration, singing, listening, musical notation, and solo performance. For teachers who wish to delve into written notation, stave notation worksheet 4 is available to practice writing pitch and rhythm on the stave.
