Link it! Prior knowledge - Mapping - Year 6
Geography Resource Description
When preparing Year 6 students for a lesson on mapping, it's important to activate their prior knowledge in the subject. Children will have previously encountered maps at various stages of their education, both in Key Stages 1 and 2. They are likely to be familiar with the concept of time zones and some may have even applied their map-reading skills during orienteering activities. While a few students might have had the opportunity to explore digital mapping tools like Google Earth, fewer might be acquainted with more specialised platforms such as Digimap. Encouraging students to document what they already know about maps in the 'Prior Knowledge' section of their Knowledge Organiser sets the groundwork for the lesson and helps them to connect new information with what they already understand about the topic.
The 'Link It!' section of the lesson focuses on drawing connections between the students' existing knowledge of maps and other areas. This includes looking at how mapping skills relate to other subjects they study, such as geography or history, and how these skills can be applied in various academic contexts. Additionally, it's beneficial to encourage students to reflect on their personal experiences with maps, which might include family trips, navigating their local area, or using technology for directions. By establishing these links, students can appreciate the practical applications of their mapping skills and understand how they form an integral part of both their academic and personal lives.
