Progression pedagogy - Mapping - Year 6

Maps are an essential tool for navigation and orientation, helping us to find our way around unfamiliar places by providing a visual representation of the area. In Year 6, students engage with a structured unit of learning that utilises a systematic approach to ensure they not only understand how to use maps but also remember the key concepts taught. The unit adopts a 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, know it' methodology, designed to maximise opportunities for pupils to retain information and apply their knowledge effectively.

At the beginning of the learning journey, students 'link' new information to what they already know, creating connections that facilitate easier recall. As they progress, the 'learn it' stage involves direct teaching of map-reading skills and concepts. This is followed by 'check it', where students' understanding is assessed, and 'show it', which gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a practical way. Finally, the 'know it' stage ensures that the knowledge sticks and can be recalled in the future. This progression pedagogy, mapped out by Focus Education, ensures that by the end of the unit, students are not only able to find their way using maps but also understand the underlying principles of map reading and navigation.
