Progression pedagogy - Materials - Year 1

The learning unit for Year 1 students on the topic of materials introduces them to the various types of materials that can be found in their immediate environment. The unit is structured to enhance the pupils' ability to not only acquire knowledge but also to retain it effectively. This is achieved through a systematic approach known as 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it', which is a part of the 'Five stages of learning and remembering' framework provided by Focus Education. The aim is to maximise the opportunities for students to absorb and recall the information they have learned.

The progression within this unit begins before the learning takes place, where students are prepared for the upcoming content. During the learning phase, interactive and engaging methods are used to teach about the different materials that surround us. As the unit progresses, various checkpoints are incorporated to assess the understanding and retention of the information covered. At the end of the learning, students are encouraged to demonstrate their knowledge, ensuring that the concepts have been grasped firmly. After the learning, the focus shifts to reinforcement and ensuring that the knowledge sticks, allowing students to confidently identify and discuss the materials they encounter in their everyday lives.
