Gymnastics 1 - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 6 Gymnastics module, students will delve into the dynamic world of gymnastic rolls and learn to incorporate them into partner routines safely. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to perform rolls with or without support, master the technique of tucking their head into their chin onto their chest, and use smooth entrances and exits from rolls. The success of the lesson is measured by the students' ability to meet these criteria. Key vocabulary such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'points of contact', 'rolling', 'tuck forward roll', and 'backward roll' is introduced to enhance understanding. Essential equipment includes cones to mark out the safe zone, gymnastic mats for practice, and bibs for a tag game used in the warm-up.
The lesson is structured to begin with a 10-minute warm-up where students play Front Support Tag, encouraging agility and awareness. The main 30-minute session is where the action intensifies. Pupils pair up and revisit the techniques for forward and backward rolls, with the teacher recapping the steps to success and pupils practicing on mats. The class then progresses to creating routines that showcase their rolling abilities, along with entrances, exits, and incorporating shapes with varying levels. The teacher guides them to include shapes in flight, such as star jumps and tuck jumps, into their routines. The lesson concludes with a cool-down where pupils play Back Support Tag and reflect on their performances, considering what went well and what could be improved for the next session.
