Gymnastics 1 - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
In the initial lesson of a Year 6 gymnastics series, students are tasked with mastering counterbalances and counter tension balances. The lesson's objectives are clear: pupils should be able to support their partner using their body weight and core strength, support with varying points of contact, and effectively use push and pull forces in their counterbalances. The session is well-equipped with a class set of cones, gymnastic mats, and bibs to facilitate the activities. The warm-up involves a game of Blob Tag, which not only energises the students but also encourages them to think about space, evasion, and the skills needed for tagging and avoiding being tagged. This dynamic start sets the tone for a lesson focused on balance, coordination, and teamwork.
During the main part of the lesson, which lasts 30 minutes, the class teacher introduces key teaching points, such as the use of pushing forces for counterbalance and pulling forces for counter tension. Students work in pairs to perform up to six variations of these balances, with the teacher providing guidance and support. The pupils are encouraged to discuss and reflect on their techniques and safety measures throughout the session. To deepen their understanding, they are tasked with creating their own counterbalances, including entrances and exits, and to hold these for three seconds before smoothly transitioning to the next balance. The lesson culminates in student performances, where they showcase their routines and receive feedback. A cool-down session focused on core strength wraps up the lesson, giving students a chance to reflect on their accomplishments and areas for improvement.
