Netball - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of the Year 3 netball series, the students are set to learn and demonstrate correct footwork, with a particular focus on mastering the pivot technique and understanding the 'footwork rule'. The lesson begins with a dynamic warm-up where pupils move around the area using various movements such as skipping, jogging, and lunging, with intermittent whistle cues to stop and start. To extend the warm-up, some pupils are given netballs to pass to others while on the move, enhancing their agility and coordination. The teacher also leads mobilisation exercises that include stretching tall, side bends, hip circles, and calf raises, with variations like 'follow the leader' to keep the warm-up engaging.
The main portion of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, delves into the specifics of pivoting. The teacher revisits passing techniques from the previous session before introducing the concept of pivoting, explaining and demonstrating how to pivot correctly when receiving the ball. Students practice running, jumping, and landing on one foot before pivoting around the landing foot. The 'Footwork Rule' is reiterated, emphasizing that the landing foot must remain stationary until the ball is passed. Pupils engage in activities to practice this rule, with peers and the teacher observing to ensure correct footwork. The session incorporates a competitive element where pupils can 'lose lives' if they incorrectly move their landing foot, fostering an environment of focus and attention to technique. The lesson concludes with a cool-down game called 'Tigers', where two pupils attempt to tag the 'Fish' (other pupils) with bean bags, and stretching exercises led by the teacher to relax the muscles after the energetic activities.
