Netball - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
The first lesson in a Year 3 netball series focuses on developing the fundamental skills of passing and catching a netball. The learning objectives are clearly set out for students to master the chest pass technique, use the 'W' shape with their hands when passing, and employ the correct technique for catching. The success criteria are designed to ensure that pupils can effectively execute a chest pass, understand the importance of the 'W' shape for power and control, and catch the ball using the appropriate method. Essential vocabulary such as 'catch', 'pass', 'chest pass', 'W' shape', 'power', 'throw', and 'step in' are introduced to help students understand and communicate about the activities.
The lesson is structured with a warm-up, main activities, and a cool-down. During the warm-up, the 'Traffic light game' gets pupils moving in various ways, such as skipping and lunging, while responding to colour-coded signals that dictate their speed. In the main part of the lesson, pupils practice passing and catching with a partner, focusing on the 'W' shape hand position and correct catching techniques. They aim to improve their number of successful catches within a minute. The chest pass is broken down into key teaching points, such as ball placement, hand positioning, and stepping into the pass for added strength. The session culminates in a 'Piggy in the middle' game, where groups of three use chest passes to score points, reinforcing the skills learned. To cool down, pupils jog and walk around the court, performing mobilization exercises and stretches, while reflecting on the importance of the skills practiced for playing netball.
