Netball - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a Year 3 netball series, students aim to enhance their ability to dodge and mark opponents effectively. The lesson begins with a dynamic warm-up game of 'Stuck in the Mud', where students work on agility and mobility through tag-based play. Following this, the teacher leads mobilisation exercises including arm circles, side bends, leg swings, and calf raises to prepare the students for the main activities. The lesson's success criteria focus on the pupils' ability to mark and dodge players and improve their skills in avoiding interception.
The main part of the lesson is dedicated to developing footwork, pivoting, dodging, and marking skills. The teacher recaps previous lessons, reinforcing the footwork rule and practice of pivoting. Pupils then engage in paired activities that involve dodging past a partner and working in groups to dodge and receive passes. Discussions are encouraged throughout to reflect on the effectiveness of their techniques. The lesson progresses to focus on marking, where pupils explore different stances and decide on the most effective marking method. The session culminates in a competitive game where teams aim to complete passes to score, with one player acting as the referee to ensure correct footwork. Finally, the cooldown involves gentle jogging and stretching exercises, with an emphasis on correct technique, such as keeping knees close during quadriceps stretches and avoiding jerky movements.
