Netball - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 3 Netball Unit Overview provides a structured approach to teaching the fundamentals of netball to pupils. This unit is designed to enhance key skills such as passing and catching, correct footwork, dodging, marking, and shooting, culminating in the ability to play a game with a solid understanding of the rules. The lessons build on ball game skills previously acquired, allowing for a progressive learning experience. Each lesson has clear learning objectives and success criteria, ensuring that students can chest pass with a 'W' shape, use bounce and overhead passes, pivot correctly, dodge and mark effectively, and employ the right shooting technique. The unit is tailored for one-hour sessions, with allowances for children to get changed, and teachers are encouraged to model skills, adjust timings if necessary, and provide focused support to pupils where necessary.
The Medium Term Plan outlines six lessons, each with specific objectives and criteria for success. The first lesson aims to teach pupils to pass and catch a netball correctly, progressing through techniques for bounce and overhead passing in the second lesson. The third lesson focuses on mastering correct footwork and understanding the 'footwork rule'. In the fourth lesson, pupils develop their ability to dodge and mark opponents, while the fifth lesson is dedicated to shooting techniques and knowing when to take a shot. The final lesson brings all the skills together, as pupils play a game of netball, applying their passing, marking, and dodging skills within the context of the game's rules. This comprehensive overview ensures that by the end of the unit, pupils will not only have improved their netball abilities but also their understanding and application of the sport's rules.
