Netball - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of a Year 3 netball series, students are expected to master two important passing techniques: the bounce pass and the overhead pass. The learning objectives are clearly set to ensure pupils can demonstrate the correct techniques for both types of passes. To accomplish this, the lesson is structured with a warm-up, main activities, and a cool-down. During the warm-up, pupils revisit the chest pass from the previous lesson, with a particular emphasis on the 'W' hand shape and the correct stance for both passing and receiving. The warm-up also includes mobilisation exercises such as arm circles and leg swings to prepare the body for the session.
The main part of the lesson is dedicated to practising the two key passing techniques. Initially, pupils work in pairs to count how many successful bounce passes they can complete in a minute, with the teacher highlighting the importance of the 'W' hand shape and the correct body movement when passing. They then progress to using a hula-hoop as a target for their bounce passes, with the aim to improve accuracy and coordination. The overhead pass is introduced next, with pupils practising in pairs before moving onto a more challenging exercise that includes a defender. The lesson concludes with a competitive game of 'piggy in the middle' to apply the skills learned, and a cool-down that reinforces the importance of stretching and reflects on the skills practised during the session. Pupils are encouraged to discuss how the techniques learned can be applied in a game of netball and to identify areas for improvement.
