Netball - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a Year 3 netball series, students aim to play a game of netball while demonstrating an understanding of the game's rules. The lesson's objectives are to ensure pupils can show comprehension of player positions and effectively apply their skills in passing, marking, and dodging. Key vocabulary such as "Zones," "Positions," and specific roles like "Goal Attack" and "Goal Defence" are introduced. Equipment required includes two netballs and a class set of cones to delineate the playing area. The warm-up consists of a ten-minute session where students travel around the space, practice jumping and landing with correct footwork, and pass the ball while moving, using the correct footwork. Instructors also introduce pivoting and various mobilisation exercises to prepare the pupils for the game.
The main section of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, begins in the classroom with a review of the netball court and the different positions. Students form mixed-ability teams of seven and discuss positions and their corresponding roles on the court. The lesson plan emphasizes the importance of using space and understanding the footwork rule. During the competition, games are played in a tournament style with teams facing off on different pitches. The lesson concludes with a ten-minute cool-down involving gentle jogging, stretching, and specific exercises such as arm circles, side stretches, and quadriceps stretches. Pupils reflect on the skills they've learned over the six lessons and consider how these skills might apply to other games and activities. The key teaching point during the cool-down is to keep the knees close together during the quadriceps stretch and to avoid any jerky movements.
