Netball - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Year 3 netball series, the primary learning objective is for pupils to be able to accurately shoot a netball using the correct technique. The success of the lesson is measured by students' ability to demonstrate the proper shooting form and to know when it is appropriate to take a shot during a game. Key terms such as 'shoot', 'pass', 'flick', and 'non-shooting hand', are introduced to enrich the pupils' netball vocabulary. Essential equipment for the lesson includes netballs, cones to delineate the shooting area, and netball posts. The warm-up consists of a series of dynamic movements such as jogging, sidestepping, and skipping, with an emphasis on correct footwork and mobilisation exercises targeting various joints like shoulders and ankles.
The main part of the lesson is dedicated to refining shooting skills, starting with a recap of the previous lesson's focus on marking and dodging. The teacher demonstrates the shooting technique, which involves balancing the ball on the shooting hand, supporting it with the non-shooting hand, bending the knees, and flicking the wrist to release the ball. Pupils practice this in pairs without the netball posts, followed by shooting practice in groups of four, aiming at the goal. To further challenge the students, they are encouraged to shoot from different distances and angles. A competitive element is introduced with a 2v2 game, where defenders score by completing passes and attackers score by netball goals. The lesson concludes with a cool-down that includes stretching exercises for various muscle groups, reinforcing the importance of proper technique in shooting and the strategic decision-making between passing and shooting.
