Two by Four - Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Physical Education Resource Description
"Two by Four" is an outdoor and adventurous activity designed to challenge a group of eight participants to engage in problem-solving and teamwork. The task requires the participants to line up shoulder to shoulder, in an alternating pattern of male and female, all facing the same direction. The aim is for the group to reorganise themselves so that all females are at one end and all males at the other. To add an element of differentiation without focusing on gender, instructors can use bibs to categorise the pupils.
The rules of the activity are designed to encourage strategic thinking and cooperation. The objective is to solve the lineup puzzle in the fewest moves possible, with a maximum limit of four moves. However, this maximum is not initially disclosed to the players to allow them some trial and error. Participants must move in pairs, defined as the player and any person directly adjacent to them. When a pair moves out of the centre, their previous spot must be filled by another pair moving in. Pairs are not permitted to pivot or turn around during the move, and the final solution must not have any gaps between participants. This activity promotes communication and collaboration as players work together to find the most efficient solution to the challenge.
